Classic Brands Memory Foam Mattress Review
You know it’s time to replace your piece of junk mattress when the coils are broken and sticking out through the side. Ooooorrr… you can try to bend them inward so you don’t catch your leg getting out of bed AGAIN and rip your pyjama pants to shreds. Yeah, that…
I didn’t have a lot of money to spend on a replacement mattress, but I needed something NOW!
Remember… Google is your friend. I sat down with my laptop and typed “best foam mattress reviews” and start pouring through the reviews. Here’s the thing though… do you want to read a “review” from someone who hasn’t even seen a memory foam mattress? Probably not! I certainly didn’t.
Although I DID get a chuckle out of one video review that showed the guy laying on the memory foam mattress and saying that it would be “great for back sleepers, but not side sleepers” and demonstrated how uncomfortable it was with his neck and spine not in alignment. Ummm… no kidding! He wasn’t using a pillow! Of course it wasn’t comfortable. That’s why we use a pillow! Dumbass.
Anyway, I’ve been using a Classic Brands Cool Gel Memory Foam mattress for 3 months now, so I think I have a pretty good handle on it.
Who's This For?
People who don’t want to spend a lot of money on a big fancy mattress, but don’t really want to sleep on a pile of old clothes on the floor. Make no mistake, any foam mattress is going to be considered a budget mattress, but it doesn't mean that it has to suck.
Classic Brands has done a pretty good job of perfecting the gel memory foam mattress. I ordered the 8-inch Queen-size version from Amazon, which they manage to squeeze into a deceptively small box. I was a little annoyed that I had to go pick it up at the post office, but that's not their fault. One of the reasons I ordered from Amazon was that I expected it to be delivered right to my door, but I guess that doesn't happen with mattresses, so I still had to go get it. It's packed pretty tight, but if you don't have a truck or SUV, good luck getting it home. Better tie it to the roof!
I opened the box and cut the plastic around the mattress. If you're expecting it to spring into shape suddenly, don't waste your breath. Nothing too exciting to see here. They say it takes 24 hours (or more!) to expand fully. I left mine overnight and came back the next day. It was fine. Was it 90% or 100% expanded? I couldn't tell you. But it was close enough for me!
Most of the reviews on Amazon are quite positive, but there are always a few bad apples. I was worried about the smell. Some people say that the mattress emits a chemical-like smell. Some say it disappears after a few days, while a tiny few say it's too horrible to sleep on and they sent it back. I can happily confirm that I smelled nothing at all from the mattress. There's no smell. Nothing bad. Nothing good. Just nothing. Perfect!
So the 8-inch mattress is basically a 6-inch high-density foam base, topped with 2 inches of gel-infused memory foam. That's a fancy way of saying that you're sleeping on a giant foam pillow. Or a cloud of fluffy foam.
The gel foam is supposed to draw heat away from your body and keep you cool. I haven't really noticed anything. I don't feel warm while I'm on it, so maybe it's doing its job... or maybe it's that I'm writing this in the middle of January in Canada... It's hard to notice little things like that. Maybe someone in a warmer climate will care about this. Who knows... maybe this summer I'll suddenly realize "Hey! This gel-infused mattress DOES keep me cooler". For now, I'm hiding under a mountain of blankets.
The mattress is quite firm. Some might say hard. If you're someone who likes to sink into your mattress, this isn't the one for you. The first time I laid down on it, I was worried that I wasn't going to be able to sleep well. Ha! No problems at all.
Here's a little fun fact for you... memory foam mattresses are designed to absorb motion. Oh, you already knew that? Well, then I bet you never thought of this... ALL MOTION. The first time I had sex on that mattress was damn interesting. If you enjoy the feeling you get from bouncing on a regular mattress, this one is going to feel very different!
How about the edges? A memory foam mattress doesn't have the reinforced strength of a traditional coil mattress. If you sit on the edge of the bed, it WILL sink quite a bit. Or maybe I'm just getting fat. But really, you're going to notice a difference. Once you move past the edge toward the centre your weight is supported better, but on the edge... prepare to sink!
Classic Brands memory foam mattresses come with a 25-year warranty, which is pretty amazing. The downside is that if you are shipping it back to them, it's going to be considerably more than the shipping charge you originally paid (probably nothing, but SOMEONE paid it) to receive it. That's what you get when you ship a full-sized mattress instead of a compressed one.
Classic Brands does not offer a trial period, but if you buy it through Amazon (like I did), you have 30 days to make up your mind.
If you're looking for an affordable mattress and don't mind sleeping on a fairly firm one, the Classic Brands Memory Foam Mattress is a great place to start. I don't expect to keep it for the 25 years worth of warranty, but hey... it's better than sleeping on the floor!
