Star Wars: The Last Jedi
When I sat down to write this post, I kept trying to start it off with some deep insight about Star Wars fans, and how there probably aren't too many movie franchises out there that must endure the same level of scrutiny as is the case with each and every Star Wars film released.
And then I realized... fuck that. Stop over-thinking this, and just write the damn post already!
I've never been to see a movie on Christmas Day. I know that it's a tradition in some people's families, but the idea has always seemed rather foreign to me. So when the words came out of MY mouth that we go see Star Wars: The Last Jedi after a big turkey feast, I think even I was shocked. I don't want to sit in a movie theatre with a bunch of other people on most days... the thought of doing it on Christmas didn't feel very appealing.
But I'm glad that I gave in!
Christmas at the Movie Theatre
It's not nearly as bad I as imagined it would be. Maybe part of the reason is that the weather outside wasn't great, or maybe it's that people would rather spend their time with their loved ones at home (suckers!) but I wasn't complaining. We weren't crowded at all. Oh no! Maybe everyone had read a horrible review and decided not to waste their hard-earned money on another Star Wars belly flop. Only one way to find out!
I'm not 100% sold on the idea of 3D movies. I still think that it's a bit of a fad. Sure, it worked really well for Avatar, but there have been so many movies since where I've felt that 3D was more gimmicky than anything. (Yeah, that's right! I'm looking at YOU, Gnomeo and Juliet!) When it comes to Star Wars though, I want to see it in the best possible experience... and that has to be AVX 3D. It's been 2 years since The Force Awakens, and I still remember clearly the scene with the Star Destroyer that just seemed to hang there right within my touch. Well done, JJ. Well done, indeed!
Enough of the Babble! How was the Movie?
OK, OK... If you're looking for someone to tell you that this was the best Star Wars release in the epic franchise... you've come to the wrong place. Sorry. That honour is still probably held by The Empire Strikes B
ack, although The Force Awakens and Rogue One were excellent offerings as well!
It's not that The Last Jedi was a horrible movie. It wasn't. But why was Luke Skywalker such a pussy? Why did Rose stop Finn from sacrificing himself to stop the battering ram that was clearly going to kill everyone unless someone did something heroic? Why are Rey's parents junk dealers instead of something awesome? Who the hell was Supreme Leader Snoke? So many questions. So few answers.
I walked out of the theatre thinking "Well that was ok..." which is a hell of a lot better than I've walked out of SOME of those movies... Remember the sheer disappointment of The Phantom Menace? Yeah, you're welcome.
The Last Jedi feels very much like a "filler" movie to me, wedged in between what will hopefully be two amazing JJ Abrams classics. It's not horrible, but it's hardly memorable.
It's a shame that we have to wait another 2 years to see if JJ Abrams can finish as strongly as he started!
Star Wars: The Last Jedi doesn't suck, but it's not anything to get excited about.
